Better selfies, better portraits: the complete guide
1 min read
The quality of the portrait depends heavily on the selfie. With a few simple rules you get much more out of it.
Light
Even light is the most important thing. It works best to face a window so daylight comes from the front. Avoid harsh shadows and strong backlight, such as a bright window behind you.

Camera and gaze
Hold the camera at eye level and look straight into it. That creates a natural, open impression. A photo from below or above distorts the proportions.
Background
A calm, not too dark background helps you be recognized clearly. The background in the selfie is not the final one, you choose that later in the look builder. All that matters is that your face stands out clearly.
What to show
Show yourself the way you want to appear in the final portrait. Glasses, a beard or a headscarf are kept from the selfie. A clearly visible face without a hat or sunglasses gives the best result.
Common mistakes
Strong filters, extreme angles, motion blur and a partly hidden face are the most common reasons for weaker results. The more natural and sharp the selfie, the better the portrait.
